چکیده

Abstract Background Defining the spatial distribution, home range, and movement patterns of lake sturgeon ( Acipenser fulvescens ) is important to managers decision-makers given large migration potential potamodromous behavior exhibited by species. A remnant population remains in far eastern basin Lake Erie although recent efforts have estimated size, described age identified a primary spawning site no study date has examined distribution or movements individuals within this population. Between 2014 2018, we acoustically tagged 59 adult sturgeon, captured Buffalo Harbor area, monitored their large-scale throughout with Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry System small-scale Vemco Positioning area. After dividing into seven sections, ran multi-state mark–recapture model examine rates out most section lake. Within heavily utilized section, ranges our for each season year using averaged Brownian bridge models. Results Although some demonstrated movements, traversing entirety Erie, majority spent time Home appeared vary among seasons, but were consistent across years selecting northeastern, rocky, shallow area array during pre-spawning seasons leaving array, trough running along northwestern portion comprising sand bedrock, summer fall seasons. Conclusions Documenting these aligns previous findings that on either end are genetically similar demonstrates exhibit strong philopatry. Our models provide reference points, form utilization distributions, indicating used areas Future studies should what parameters driving selection areas.

Growth and Appetite of Juvenile Lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens

–Growth rates of juvenile lake sturgeon (initial weight 8 to 9 g, temperature 17.5° C), fed twice a day on brown worms for 56 days increased from -1.5% BW/d (% body wet weight/day) at zero ration to 2.6% BW/d at a ration of 13.2% BW/d. Maintenance ration was 1.6% BW/d. Fish fed larger rations had higher energy densities and lower water content. Appetite (average volitional daily food consumptio...

Coding of sound direction in the auditory periphery of the lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens.

The lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens, belongs to one of the few extant nonteleost ray-finned fishes and diverged from the main vertebrate lineage about 250 million years ago. The aim of this study was to use this species to explore the peripheral neural coding strategies for sound direction and compare these results to modern bony fishes (teleosts). Extracellular recordings were made from af...

Multiple molecular approaches yield no evidence for sex-determining genes in lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens)

Common DNA-based sexing assays have been widely used for the conservation and management of mammals and birds. However, many fishes do not have genetic sex determination and in those that do, the plasticity of the genes involved means that species-specific assays are normally required. Such DNAsexing markers would be especially valuable in lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) because of their s...

A new species of nucleo-cytoplasmic large DNA virus (NCLDV) associated with mortalities in Manitoba lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens.

A newly discovered virus, Namao virus, associated with morbidity and mortality, was detected among juvenile lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens being propagated by a conservation stocking program for this endangered species in Manitoba, Canada. The outbreaks resulted in cumulative mortalities of 62 to 99.6% among progeny of wild Winnipeg River or Nelson River lake sturgeon and occurred at 2 geog...
